The PRF Box (Platelet-Rich Fibrin Box) is a specialized, autoclavable surgical cassette used in dentistry and oral surgery for the final preparation and preservation of the PRF biomaterial.

1. Function and Purpose

The primary function of the PRF Box is to convert the soft, gelatinous PRF clot—which is extracted from the patient's centrifuged blood—into a stable, high-density membrane or plug for clinical use.

Its main purposes include:

  • Membrane Creation: It provides a sterile, flat surface and uses a compression plate to apply gentle pressure, squeezing the exudate (liquid) out of the PRF clot. This flattens the clot into a standardized, easy-to-handle, resilient PRF membrane.

  • Plug Creation: Some PRF boxes include a separate cylinder and piston to compress the clot into a dense, cylindrical PRF plug, which is ideal for filling extraction sockets.

  • Sticky Bone/Block Creation: It can be used to mix bone graft particulates with the PRF exudate (the liquid pressed out of the clots) to create a highly moldable, bioactive material known as "sticky bone" or a PRF block.

  • Preservation and Hydration: The box is designed to collect the protein-rich exudate (which contains growth factors) in a sterile well. The finished PRF membranes or plugs can be stored in this exudate within the box throughout the surgical procedure to keep them hydrated and viable.

2. Key Features

The PRF Box is typically a reusable, medical-grade stainless steel cassette with distinct components:

Component Purpose
Main Tray A flat base with a micro-perforated or grid surface to drain the exudate. This is where the clot is flattened.
Compression Plate/Lid A weighted plate placed on top of the clots to apply uniform pressure, forcing the liquid out and creating the membrane.
Exudate Well A depression or separate compartment in the base to collect the liquid (exudate) that is pressed out of the clots. This fluid is used for hydration or mixing with bone graft material.
